Brandon Bernard is scheduled to be put to death by the federal government on December 10th, after 21 years in prison. Five of the jurors who initially found Brandon guilty at age 18, as well as the prosecutor who helped put him on death row, are asking Trump to intervene and halt the execution.
Brandon was sentenced to death for a crime committed in 1999 when he was just 18 years old. Brandon, an accomplice, did not have a leading role in the offense. He has demonstrated positive behavior throughout the 20 years of incarceration; he has even reached out to others and counseled them to not follow in his path. When the sentencing decisions were made, both the government and the jurors had an incomplete picture and Brandon. Five of the nine surviving jurors no longer believe that a death sentence is necessary for Brandon. When given new information years late from Brandon's defense team, the jurors fully supported Brandon's clemency petition to get him off death row (these were the same jurors who, 20 years ago at trial unanimously voted for Brandon to receive a death sentence.
